A tale of two dictionaries

Once upon a time there were two dictionaries.  One was a girl named Oxford and a boy called Longman. Nobody knew their originated.  Oxford was thin and had a medium height so she never heard a strong criticism in regard to her figure.  Longman suffered from overweight and it was his main concern. A poor boy was almost alone and defenceless.  Finding any friends was a considerable difficulty for him.  Longman’s sorrows were indescribable.
A dusty student’s bookshelf was like a house for them. There always ruled an utter chaos and mess. In such kind of circumstances called “philological apocalypse” it was impossible for them to meet each other. Their lives seemed to be uneventful but the occurrence changed everything.
It happened once in a blue moon, but the student of college of Romance and Germanic languages had a free time. He decided to do out because the mess was a real eyesore for him. All useless things that occupied a space were cleaned from the bookshelf.  And then Oxford and Longman found themselves face to face.  It was love at first definition. They had too much in common, especially 26 letters of the alphabet.
Time passed. Oxford assured herself that she would never meet anyone better than Longman was. They was standing on the bookshelf long and happily.  They always were together:  in singular and plural, in males and females, in sessions and weekdays until a dictionary called “Frenchman” appeared. He separated them.
It was severe for Longman.  A poor boy‘s life turned into pointless existence.  Oxford like every woman loved with her ears.  Longman’s reach inner world didn’t satisfy her.  She preferred an emotive “Frenchmen”.
Not every tale has a happy end.

Morality: Once in a while be interested in lives of your dictionaries. Maybe, even now they need your support.

  1. So sad tale. I never thought that my dictionary need my support, and dictionary's life can be so eventful. I was close to tears.

  2. Oh my God, I was close to tears! You are in need of having a strong stomach to jot such fairy tale down! But I have to confess you exceled at relating the idea.
